I got a new battery today and the connectors are too big for the new battery, Do I need some kind of adaptor?

Agreed...post size should be standard for the threads on the side post batteries.

No adapters, buy the correct battery cables for side post terminals. On batteries with top posts, the pos & neg posts are slightly different diameter and are tapered.

and scroll to down to "Accesories - SAE Automotive Terminals"
