I used to post on this forum a couple years ago when I first got my Bonneville, then kids kinda took away any ideas I had of making it faster. Anyway, I forgot what my username was so now it'* this.

Anyway, my 96 Bonneville SE has a sound that sounds like metal rubbing together and I found a little bit of metal shavings under the engine. I found where the shavings are coming from but I don't know what the part is. Here'* a pic of the part:



Can anyone tell me what part this is?

a/c compressor

that would be your ever loving a/c compressor, and if its making metal grinding noises the bearings in it are bad, replace the unit soon or the pulley on it might lock up and youll be in a world of *.h.i.t.

That'* what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure since when I turned the A/C off the noise didn't stop. Well, thanks guys, you've been a big help. I have the day off tomorrow so I may be posting on how the hell to get it out. If anyone wants, I'll post pics just for info on how to do it for someone who has never done it.

How do you intend to evacuate and recharge? Best bet is a shop.

Anyway, after further thinking (and shining the flashlight in my engine bay one more time) the shop doesn't seem like a bad idea. It'* in a pretty bad place right under the engine and there'* a debris guard under the engine, so going under it probably won't work.

Anyways....You yes should have a shop do the evacuating and recharging of the system once you get the compressor replaced....If I remember right, disconnect the lines, and pull the bolts out of the bracket on the engine, and get it down?

Evacuate first, then replace the compressor, then recharge.
