proper cleaning
Pull everything out, clean every little bit of dust you can find out. I do this once a month [or so]. That'* the only time my system gets shut down. You will also want to let the system sit for 20-30 minutes before working on it, and draining the capacitors before doing anything [unplug PSU, push power button a few times {or until little red LED on the mobo shuts off}].

Bring it outside if it is not a raging blizzard and get your duster can, clear all that crap out, l then bring inside and get the rubbing alchol out for everything else.
Unplug it. Get my canned air. Spray it till everything is clean. I'm not too anal about the cleaning. I just get most of the dust outta there. I have a custom filtering system I made that works really well.
vacuuming works pretty good for me. just be absolutely positive that you ground yourself to the chassis before you bring the sucker anywhere near the computer. i only do this cause i always end up wasting canned air, so i decided not to get it anymore. not to mention the fact that you have to be 18 pretty much where ever you go to get the stuff.
