I bought a 1976 5/24 model Toro 2 stage snow thrower this past summer from an old man. It'* in great condition and runs very strong (one of those solid steel jobs). Has a 5 HP Tecumseh engine.

The issue I'm having is that the discharge chute clogs VERY easily. I can only go about 5' before I have to unclog it (disengaging the auger and picking at it with a big screwdriver). It'* annoying and very inefficient. The auger spins nicely and when I'm not moving snow I get a nice, strong blowing feeling from the discharge (I guess that would be stage 2). Anyone have any ideas on how to NOT make it clog?

how thick is the snow, and how fast are you going?

The snow is farily heavy (wet), but still...a 2 stage should go right through it. I was using speeds 1 and 2 (out of 3). Neither speeds seemed to make a difference, nor did only doing a 2-3" width of snow...that only prolonged the usage before it clogged.

I have heard of cooking spray or something that can make them flow better....can anyone confirm that?!?!?

you can by going and doing it right now and telling us if it worked

Make sure you have a new and properly adjusted auger drive belt[main culprit],......a loose belt will cause the auger to slow down when normal amounts(5-10-15") of snow is trying to be cleared.Five HP snowthrowers are on the low end of the 2-stage snowthrower scale(had one for 10 years before I ditched it for a 9HP),they don't work real well in the wet/heavy stuff,(they Are fairly adequate,and they SURE beat shoveling) ....also,you will need to use the slowest/lowest forward speed gear,when trying to move the wet stuff.,.....don't worry about coating/lubricating any parts of the drive housing or chute,doubt if that would help things one ounce.....

Actually lubing the chute CAN help, but WD-40 ain't gonna do jack.
Best thing to try is ski wax.
My Dad had the same problem, cleared it right up, clogs about half as much as it used to.

I'm going to pull the belt off tomorrow and buy a fresh one...and make sure it'* tightened properly. I'll then put some ski wax on the chute. That'* as good as it'* gonna get!
