high speed wasn't available in any way shape or form in my area wired so I went with high speed satellite. I'll never go back to dialup either. 900 Kbps VS 24 Kbps will always get my vote.

charter 3megabit cable routered up to 4 computers on a highly unsecure wireless network, so ppl our friends can use our internet easily when they come over

Actually, my neighbor has this kind of service WITH a wireless hub so he can connect with his laptop anywhere in the house. His laptop works over at my house too, apparently within his wireless range. Perhaps a wireless card would be a worthwhile addition to my home computer after all.
