There is no real "best" tire. It depends on what you want out of the tire. Do you want durability or grip? all-season or race only? Surf around tirerack.com for a bit and see if you can narrow it down a little.

I like my BFGoodrich Momentum Tires, They've got acceptable grip. I've had them at speed in cats and dogs rain, Not the lightest hint of hydroplaning. Wear is more than acceptable, They're 80K tires, And with track use they might actualy get 40K.
I've got Goodyear Eagle GA Touring tires (standard equipment on Chevy Impalas, I think).
They're on their deathbed though, doesn't take much rain for them to hydroplane pretty bad. I'll have new tires before winter.
