Sounds like it may need a rebuild. Try shifting into 2nd gear & then into reverse does that help at all?

Sound like Saturn same model year had issues with automatics in a recall. Have you checked to see if there are any recalls on your car with your VIN # ?
Lots of talk online about manual trans & the reverse issues, from shift forks & related cable issues.
Possibly call a few trans shops who may be more familiar with these potential known issues/bug fixes. Just a thought.

Assuming you have a hydraulically operated clutch, check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder, if the level is down, check around the clutch slave cylinder that operates the throw out bearing for leakage. If found the slave cylinder should be replaced. It'* possible that the shop that replaced your motor booger-ed something up.

Ummm . . . I'm guessing that this is a manual transmission, but could you confirm?

If it is grinding in an automatic then may as well skip to an overhaul.

You need to learn how to describe your problem. First of all if this is an automatic you need to tear it down. If standard when does it grind? Clutch in trying to change gears., etc

It drove fine for almost 3 months after they replaced the motor and the clutch runs off of the brake fluid and thats still full and they put a new throwout bearing slave cylinder and clutch plate in when they did the motor

Its a manual trans i had that in the title and it shifts like butter when the car is off but with it running itll grind when i put it in gear and let off the clutch. reverse is almost non existent i can sometimes get it to work if it grinds i put it in first pull forward a bit and try again sometimes that works
