There seems to be no end to these insane temperatures. Best I could do was wait til after dark with the car parked in the garage.
I opened the door and sat inside. When I closed the door the security light stopped flashing and went out. I waited quietly for about 6 or 7 minutes. I noticed something click and I think there was a flash (possibly the security light). I turned the key to on and the pump kicked in for 2 seconds. Sure enough it came right to life when I turned the key to start. I don't own a tow truck so I don't dare drive it out on the road. Maybe I will try to drive it tomorrow when I can get someone to come and get me if it dies again.

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!! Drove 4 or 5 miles down the road no problem. Drove 10 miles round trip to the shoping cemter no problem. Back and forth to work today (32 miles each way) Ran like a top! I can't believe it was just a glitch in th security system.. I have been hunting for the problem for more than a week.

You should probably cough up the dough and have a dealer test the security system. I'd hate to see you get stranded somewhere.

By doing what I told you, you should have gotten the Security Sequence back in cycle. It'* not 100%, but it'* likely in the less than 100% of normal that most of use drive around with all of the time (IMHO), without knowing it.

Whatever knocks it out of kilter, may happen again. just do what you did. It re-happened to me a couple of times in three years.

If it becomes a pest, then you can do a Security Relearn yourself. It'* simple. It just takes some time and gas. I thought Dan posted the procedure here or it'* in '98 FSM that somebody put up here.. If not, here'* the instructions from INTENSE. You don't need an Aeroforce gage (like for a CASE Learn), nor necessarily have a Dealer do it.

Good Luck, and embrace the Bonnevillism,

charlie

Drove it again today. 35 miles each way to a ball game in 105 degree heat. Drove perfectly! I really appreciate your help Charlie!!! Maybe someday I can return the favor.

Drats!! Staled on the highway on the way to work on Tuesday. Just driving along and it just dies with no event. I shift it to nuetral and it restarts before I come to a stop. Its more than a little unnerving to be in traffic and not be able to accelerate. It did it 5times on the way to work and five more times on the way home. I tried to do the relearn proceedure posted by Intense but it wants to start when I turn the key to start. I spke to a local mechanic who told me to try to get it to relearn by simply turning the ignition to 'on' wait 15 minutes turn it off without removing the key, then turning it back to 'on' for 15 minutes. Then turn it off remove the key ,reinsert the key and start the car. I did that and sure enough it is driving fine now. Drove it about 75 miles with no event. The Climate Controll is going haywire, the display just shows 3 dashes and the blower runs wide open. Other than that everything seems normal.

Finally I got so disgusted I resorted to taking it to a local mechanic. He found the problem. See attached photos. I did not notice a problem with the wiring in the tank when I had it apart but, apparently after I replaced the pump the wiring got much worse. Looks to me like I am lucky the tank did not blow up. He installed a new GM ump and strainer and now it runs like a charm. I still can't figure out why it was affecting my climate control display. $525 later and I am back on the road.

I wish that I had hit it, but however way fixed is great. You have to have a car which you can count on. Everybody has enough on their plate. My computer/PCM in the '95 had failed and I was getting all kinds of nonsense DTC codes. And couldn't explain it till I just replaced the computer. It quietly wears ya out, wonderin' if/when something is going to go wrong while driving.

I'm serious about the heat and the radio/ECC displays. The wife and I are on a Staycation week. She gets the garage because she has a New BLACK Altima. (sorry, there'* rice in the house. I couldn't talk her out of it.) You really want to burn your skin? Put your hand on the roof/hood/trunklid of her car in the 106* index we've had the past 2 days.

So my white '98 SSEI gets left in the sun. Both days i got into it in late morning. I had nothing but a couple of red lines on the radio display, and the ECC display was really struggling to give me everything properly lit at the same time. After i had cooled off the interior while driving around, everything was back to normal.

Stay cool. North America was 2.5* hotter in June.... than ever before.. ever.
