Exclamation Wiring at Starter - 1984 Fiero Duke Muncie 4 Speed - Bone Stock

Hi Folks,

I know this topic has been beaten to death; that said I have never found a straight answer related to my specific vehicle/starter. When I replaced the starter, I simply followed the wiring exactly as it was on the old starter as that starter worked flawlessly for years.

The configuration is quite simple - i'm not convinced it is correct though. As a side note, I now have a jumpy tach that did not exist before. Anyway, my wiring is as follows - the positive battery cable to the large solenoid bolt, and all of the other smaller wires to the small solenoid bolt.

Starts immediately, runs great at startup and drops down to closed loop as it should. When at idle and driven conservatively, the tach is fine. That said, going into hi revs either accelerating or downshifting the tach acts up (above say 2500 rpm) but settles back down at lower rpms. Also when the tach acts up, the shift light (muncie 4 speed) flashes on and off as if something is shorted. I already ordered a tach filter from Rodney Dickman but that is a crapshoot move on my part. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery cables and all sensors are new. Have also installed a known good cluster.

Your input is appreciated.

Sounds like the tach lead on the distributor is getting some extra energy form somewhere. Trace the tach wire from the distributor and see what it is touching etc. This could be a case of moving any wire on the car moved this wire just enough that now you have a problem.

For the shift light, if the tach intermittently reads high, the shift light will trigger. When it is acting up, I bet the tach is trying to indicate really high but isn't able to get there quickly enough, but the light knows what the tach is thinking so it lights up.

After all the grief it turns out the positive battery cable to the starter was bad. Even though it looked good, I replaced it and now everything works great. Tach nice and smooth; car runs great.

Thanks for your suggestions..
