Take a white paper towel or rag and check the color of your transmission fluid. At the same time, smell it. Does it smell burnt?

i just smelled it, checked the color and the level..to be honest i dont know what the level should be. i took it to get the fluids checked last month..they said it wasnt burnt...i confirmed that today...the fluids really not that old either...i also am noticeing some dark fluid on the top of the moter between the valve cover gaskets and the intake manifold.. its not coolant.

To check the transmission fluid level, park on a level surface, and bring the engine up to temperature. While engine is running, pull the dipstick out, wipe it, put back in and pull it back out. You will see markings at the end of the stick. If the stick is wet near the full mark, your good. If its near the ADD mark, add about half a quart. Recheck. You don't want to overfill.
To do the wipe test, take a WHITE paper towel/rag and take the dipstick out and just gently wipe it on the rag. It should be pretty close to red. If it is brown or black. Its bad.
To do the smell check, grab a bottle of unused transmission fluid. Open cap, smell the fluid. Now compare this smell to the end of your dipstick.

well i can tell u without even smelling it that when i pulled the dipstick out it wasnt red or close to it... it was really dirty (almost black) every time i wipped it (3 or 4 times). I drove my car about 11 miles pulled over (left it idling) and pulled the dipstick, whipped it on a white towel (3 or four times). i dont know how burnt tranny fluid smells but i will do the comparison test asap. as far as the level..it is passed the last hole on the dip stick.

That could be clutch material in your trans fluid. I would stop by a known trustworthy shop and have them take a quick peek at it.

Checked filter and magnet. Both looked horrible. Im gonna flush the liquid, swap pans and magnet, then refill. Does anybody know of any shift kits (good price) that go good with a 99gpgt non */c?
