Horn not working
 

2003 grand am GT- horns are good, fuse is good. Had to take it to shop to get wheel bearings done & I asked they to check horn. They say the whole air bag/ horn assembly needs to be replaced. For $850!! There has got to be a better (cheaper) way. Any ideas??

cut the black wire to your horn or bcm if its easier to get at and wire it to one side of a momentary contact switch the other side to ground

I believe the ring where the steering wheel meets the column is known for losing contact after a while. You should be able to bend the pins back out to fix the problem. I'll see if i can find a step by step guide later.

I couldn't find a step by step guide yet (still looking). But I have a couple leads. Does the relay click when you push the horn? Did you try pushing on different spots on the steering wheel? or try pushing it while the wheel is turned at different spots?

I saw a video on youtube of an Alero who's horn pad inside the wheel went bad, and the horn would randomly go off. That would probably be what the mechanic is talking about.

As I mentioned in my last post, there's a ring on the column and a pin on the wheel that controls the horn. When the horn is pressed on the wheel, the pin makes contact with the ring. The ring is known to get dirt on it, causing a bad connection. From what I read on a couple other forums, you can take the plastic off of the column, and see the ring to see if it's dirty.

With a little more digging, I found that removing the multifunction switch (turn signal switch) and cleaning the contacts have solved the problem in a couple cases.

I'm with Travis, I'm suspecting the horn contacts to be inside the airbag. Which is unserviceable.

Before the horn stuck on, The horn worked when I hit the key fob but not when I pressed on steering wheel. fuse, relay are good. will check horn button & ring this weekend.
I think if I remove the airbag fuse & disconnect the connector then I can safely remove the steering wheel cover. I will also look at the multi-function switch. Thanks!
