Hi Guys I am new here.

My car spun a baring so me and my buddy pulled the motor to send out for a rebuild. I have had the car for 15 years and I assumed it was all original as very little has been altered. However when we pulled the trans we discovered it was a Ford three speed Trans. The car has a console floor shift. The block is a 326.

I would like to put a more appropriate trans in be it a three or a four speed....

So here are my questions:

1. What make and model (3) speed trans would a 66 Lemans come with?

2. What make and model (4) speed trans would a 66 Lemans come with?

3. Lastly, and this is important, if I went the (4) speed route....Would my shifter come up in the same place and therefore allow me to reuse the original console??

it sounds pretty robust, any reason you wouldnt just use the one you have?

I am into putting baco what would have been there originally.

the other thread says that the 3 or 4 spd toploader was original so i was speaking mechanically, like something was wrong with yours.

If you got a Heavy Duty 3 speed transmission in a mid 60'* Pontiac, you got a Dearborn (FORD) 3 speed. You also could have had, I believe a Muncie 3 speed, but possibly a Saginaw. The Dearborn is one of the strongest 3 speeds ever made.

The 4 speed could have been a Muncie or a Saginaw.

The shifter will come out of the floor in the same place and there was only 1 manual shift console, so put your mind at ease!!

The Ford Trans which is in my Pontiac ovbioulsy was not installed by GM at the original plant.

So what you are saying is that the trans which came with my car originally was either a Muncy or a Saginaw.

If you car was ordered with the Heavy Duty 3 speed trans, you have the correct transmission, which was built by Ford! So if you want to use what the factory installed, you have it in your hands.

Yep! The heavy duty 3-speed was a top-loader ford 3-speed(but it has GM pilot bearing and clutch and throw-out bearing and was installed by Pontiac) I have one that came out of my '65 GTO. I've torn up a couple of 4-speeds and then put the original 3-speed back in and never had a problem with it. Put yours back in it a good tranny!!!!!!!!!!
