Default 2001 Pontiac 3.8L supercharged P0301 cylinder 1 misfire detected

So I replaced my crankshaft position sensor about 3 Weeks ago because my car would randomly die and have trouble starting up. That replacement fixed that problem.

Also replaced my water pump while I was at it because it was leaking coolant a little bit. So the car runs okay.

Except for the fact that, ever since I've had the car(2017) it'* had trouble accelerating while going uphill like a jerking motion. Not always but sometimes. Also getting around 70 mph sometimes, my car will jerk and have trouble maintaining a consistent speed.

Although it doesn't turn off on me since cps replacement, today I was driving on the freeway for about 10 minutes and and my car jerked a bit but not as much as it would before I changed parts mentioned above. Then the service engine light came on and got a read done at oriellys. P0301 cylinder 1 misfire is what came up. Also I had a full diagnostic done at the dealership and they told maf sensor had come on but it didn't come on for me today. I haven't replaced the maf sensor. Could that be a culprit?
Anyways I haven't done anything to it.

Any help is greatly appreciated 🙏.

Tap on the sensor with a large wrench or similar and if the engine stumbles or dies it'* bad. If that has no effect does NOT mean the sensor is good.
The misfire is not likely due to the MAF. With you description of losing power uphill I would look at the fuel pump. Pressure and volume.
MAF will cause jerking.

What carfixer007 said ^^^^^^^ plus:

Don't just replace stuff. Answer these questions:

What does the fuel pressure read with ignition on engine stopped?

What does the fuel pressure read at idle?

How many miles on the car?

How many miles on the spark plugs?

How many miles on the spark plug wires?

Sounds like a coil is failing. The problem you described is often tied to a cylinder misfire. The cause is typically a bad plug or wire. I had the exact problem, and it ended up simply being corrosion on one of the coil contacts. Corrosion on the coil contacts is super easy to check. Just pull the plug wire and make sure the coil post is shiny.

All good advice above ^
When it comes to misfires the first thing I do is have some new spark plugs ready & pull a few out and check the gaps & color condition.
If the gaps are not within spec, replace them all & confirm gaps set are correctly on the new plugs.
Spark plug wires, every few years I replace mine as a tune up procedure.
Same with the fuel filter, if you can't remember when you last changed the fuel filter, it probably needs one.

Default Thanks for all the advice guys.

I had a new fuel pump before I posted this thread. Should've mentioned that. Also car has about 144,000 miles. I just did an oil change before posting original thread.

Also I was given advice to change my spark plugs. Well I didn't have enough money for all of them so I bought one to change the spark plug #1. So I go to change it and I rip my spark plug wire out lol so eventually I changed the spark plug wire and spark plug for #1

Now it runs alot better than it it has in a while! So I'm all alone in Reno and never worked on my car till bout 3 months ago so I will be taking it to California to get it worked on in a shop a family member owns. I will get the rest of my plugs and wires changed.

So after changing the #1 plug & wire I cleared the code and have drove the car for 2 weeks now and no code has came up. Not nearly as much jerking. But I am only getting 16 mpg. I feel like that'* really bad but I can't remember what it was when I would drive more frequently..

Well all in all it runs good right now. I've had the gtp for 3 years now and it'* starting grow on me. Replacing the one spark plug really made a difference. My car accelerates alot easier and w/ less hesitation. I'll try to update more!

16MPG is terrible for it, unless you're romping on it all the time. It will probably get better when you change the other plugs and wires . . . but no guarantees.

Default Update on 2001 Pontiac

Hey guys so let me tell you guys more about my car.
Its a silver 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix Gtp 3.8L supercharged. It has the following:
New spark plugs and wires (AcDelco)
New water pump
New chamshaft position sensor
New fuel filter
New fuel pump
New air filter
New oil filter
Engine oil changed around 600 miles ago. 145,107 miles on it.
It now runs really well after getting all the spark plugs and wires changed. Took it for a about 200 mile round trip the other day with not hesitation from the engine or check engine light turning on. So thanks everyone. And I hope anyone who reads the thread can maybe learn a bit from my experience.
