What order should I MOD my engine
This is little more then a suggestion of the order to MOD your engine. This is my opinion and I encourage others to add to this to help new members. This is just a guide.
Cold air intake, or fenderwall intake with a good filter such as K&N. 180* thermostat, this is optional. Drop pulley size, no smaller then 3.5" colder spark plugs, 1 or 2 rangers colder PCM upgrade, performance tune Shift kit Some type of scan gauge that reads KR (Knock Retard) Exhaust upgrades Series 80 muffler, or series 40 if duels. Free flowing cat Powerlog front manifold, or PEMs Best a good set of headers such as TOG Valve train Rockers, such as 1.9:1 roller rockers valve springs, No higher then #105 springs Oil restricted push rods CAM (do research on this to find best choice) New timing chain, sprockets, and tensioner Advanced upgrades Port and polished LIM Port and polish heads Port and polish supercharger Gen5 if possible larger throttle body port and polish Larger injectors Transmission rebuild. Lower gears. Intercooler NOS. Lets here thoughts on this list. |
What exactly is knock retard
|
It's when you have preignition. If the air fuel ignites before the spark plugs fire you can chip the piston, among other things. When the knock sensors detect knock they will tell the PCM to pull timing to protect the engine. When you have KR you need to address that problem by reducing heat and pressures.

Dan,
Who makes a good PCM upgrade for this vehicle. I have a 1992 Bonneville, 3800, series 1. |
Danthers, unless I missed it, you gotta add colder plugs in there somewhere.

Don Thanks, just added that in. |
To get the most from things, plug changes, etc should be determined by how the car is running and reading the plugs.
The NA motor can benefit early on by porting a lower manfold. Another item for this that won't improve or hurt performance is to plug the coolant to the upper manifold. This will eiliminate the issue of the EGR area cracking and allowing coolant in the UIM to flow into the intake tract. To start modding though, a first suggestion is to start with a car that is up to speed on maintenance items like brakes, struts etc. |
You are correct. This list assumes you are starting with a firm foundation. Solid engine and transmission, strong brakes and suspension.

Dan do you know of any members that have the nos setup already. If so that would be great never seen a bonnie setup with it before.
