Turbo headers
So, I'm just kinda sorta thinkin', ya know, turbos are cool, and somebody'* gotta whine louder than Bill next year.....but I don't want to buy a kit. Does anybody have any experience with building headers? I saw a guy had built some regular headers on L67swap.com, and they looked great, but I have no idea even where to start. Would I have to torch my headers, or should I take my mani'* to a machine shop and have them build the "base" (that bolts to the head) and go from there?

If you didn't live so damn far away I could give you the number of a friend of mine that does some of ZZP'* fabrication. He runs Modified FX in GR, MI. He does a lot of custom turbo fabrication for Talons, BMW'*, etc. He may have a no compete clause so you'd have to ask.

I want to do it myself, I want to learn the art of turbo. Does anybody know the specs on the TOG'* or SLP headers? I've read about some weld together kits for the 350'*, they're 18 gauge mild steel, IIRC. If that'* the case, all I gotta do is find a local mandrel bender (easier said than done), and start playing with metal. :?
Hey DR, PM me with your buddy'* info, I'm not interested in competing with him, just learning how to fab. Thanks!

Shadd, you need to PM 95naSTA. He had a recent post about making some turbo log manifolds from scratch with one of his buddies. They looked excellent, and my understanding is that they're going on a S2 Regal for a custom turbo job. Seems right up your alley.

The project has been in que for a little bit for various reasons but were looking to start it back up agian sunday.
We've actually been practicing TIGing and after a ton more practice one of us may TIG it all up.
It definitely takes up a ton of time and neither of us really have much of that.

You might try a rear-mount set-up. It would use stock pieces all the back, and the turbo sits in place of the muffler. It eliminates the need for heavy headers as the heat doesn't build up near the motor, and you don't even necessarily need an intercooler. The only thing you have to be wary of is old rusty catalytics and pipes. A rusty cat could blow out under the extra pressure.
Mike Murphy, the pres of GOClubGP, uses a setup like that on his GP GT, and he'* getting terrific results.

Mike actually has the Squires Turbo Systems (STS) remote setup on his car. They specialize in remote mounted turbos, and Intense sold their kits for a while (hence Mike having one). Seems to do pretty damn well, and Mike'* car whistles like a big turbodiesel as it drives away. Definitely a unique setup.
