ok well i took my car to some muffler shop by my house and they said they can take the res off but reccomend not to because it will throw codes and turn the ses light on and mess up the cat converter. I have an 02 btw.......also told me i cannot get aftermarket mufflers put on as well is this true?

You shouldn't throw any codes provided they don't remove the O2 sensor located right near it'* inlet.

You can add aftermarket low restriction mufflers but be very cautious about removing the resonator, you could regret it because of the drone and loss of low end torque........might be OK if you always keep your tach over 4500 rpm.

with my stock muffy and no cat, i get nearly zero highway drone, however it does get raspy sounding over 4000RPM, but im sure drone increases tremendously with after market mufflers

No engine lights, and no damage to the cat could occur from taking out the resonator or after market mufflers, the exhaust shop guys are complete dumba$$es

I have aftermarket muffler with res and cat, and the highway drone sounds like a panther in my trunk(not a good thing)and when I let off the throttle it is very noticable. I dont know if removing the res on my 99 will help any but thats my opinion

Pretty much. If you prefer the poppy, raspy sound that the engine makes without the resonator, remove it, but at times it may get annoying. Many people like to keep them on or have them installed because they hate the sound, I happen to like it.

Maybe they were confused and thought you meant catalytic converter when you said resonator (because they sound so much alike... ...lol). Or perhaps they thought you didn't really know what you were asking.

That assumes that they knew anything at all.

Remember that muffler shops are like any other type of automotive shops. There are many out there who just hack at it and take your money. Then there are some (fewer of these) who really are good and know what the heck they are doing. Finding a good one takes time or luck and you may find that you have to travel to another town to find one who knows a CAT from a hole in the ground.

also there are some places that just plain dont want to do the work some times and will tell you whatever they want so they can be lazy and smoke bones

i may be wrong but as far as i know, the resonator is there to help restrain some exhaust noise..problem is when going with an aftermarket setup most ppl are shooting for a more aggressive sound so leaving the resonator may leave u with less sound than u may want..
