So if I understand you correctly, when you are in "1", your car shifts out of 1st at 5500? Into WHAT?

That'* not shifting out. That'* your differential shattering planetary gears and ejecting them through the casing.

To answer the rest of this, the best time to shift will be determined by the hp and torque curves of your respective engine, whether it be an L27, L36, or L67. Mods have an impact, too. Either a Gtech or a Dyno can be the best for determining this. Factory specs, if all else fails.

As much as I really hate to agree with pbj. On my 96 SE I can pull it all the way back into first and will shift into second on its own even though the shifter is still in first. Kinda makes me mad sometimes.

I am guessing you were stating the shift takes place but the? Mark after the 5500 was meant to ask a question or show uncertainty as to the RPM.

The problem of auto shifting has already been solved. The combo of a computer reprogram and a rebuilt transaxle built for the "need" is already available. Some of the computer issues require custom programming depending on the year of your Bonneville and the options involved.

Big brother is watching. The answer is yes, your login ip and your individual post ip'*, but I can't give any further info at this time. Still working on this.
