That'* not shifting out. That'* your differential shattering planetary gears and ejecting them through the casing.
To answer the rest of this, the best time to shift will be determined by the hp and torque curves of your respective engine, whether it be an L27, L36, or L67. Mods have an impact, too. Either a Gtech or a Dyno can be the best for determining this. Factory specs, if all else fails.
As much as I really hate to agree with pbj. On my 96 SE I can pull it all the way back into first and will shift into second on its own even though the shifter is still in first. Kinda makes me mad sometimes.

The problem of auto shifting has already been solved. The combo of a computer reprogram and a rebuilt transaxle built for the "need" is already available. Some of the computer issues require custom programming depending on the year of your Bonneville and the options involved.
