Default Performance Chip basics ?'*

Looking for input from anyone here that has purchased a jet performance chip or controller for their cars. On a car like mine, pretty much stock engine, will it be safe to use if I just simply pluged it in and drive? I have a 8 month old tranny with a 3 year warranty and i really dont want to void it. And are the claims of 20hp or more realistically or just hype?

It changes things like AFR, and shift points and releases your 3rd gear governor, but to get the most out of a performance chip other mods are necessary.

Smellbird has a chip in his 98 SLE, he is the best man to talk to regarding 96-99 NA Bonnevilles and chips

The 20hp will come with other mods too. The common advantage to a new chip is the governors are removed and the shift points made firmmer.

Good advice here. To simplify, a Chip is not a standalone mod. A chip is to 're-tune' for other mods, so your PCM is FORCED to take those mods into account. If they claim 20hp, they mean (this is typical with JET) that you MIGHT gain 20 hp IF you have done the intake, exhaust, and 180° thermostat. Those were the requirements for my Jet Stage 2.

By itself, that 'maybe 20 hp' chip would produce MAYBE 5-10hp, and you wouldn't be running very efficiently. I'd bet rich and lower mpg'*.

its meant to be done after the basics. Get an intake and muffler/cat first. THEN start eyein that chip. For our cars they dont make a chip really, if you want some good info talk to smellbird, hes the expert.

Ok, I have a modified intake now, and today I bought some tubing to rig up something like willwren has. I will take everyone'* advice and get an exhaust this month (planned on it allready) then start looking at chips.
