Damn. This cam vs. rocker fight is always on my mind. Every day I am back and forth on whether i want to do 1.9 roller rockers this season or just do a ported blower and headers and possibly bump my fuel system up a bit to get the engine ready for a cam next season. I'll probably do the latter but i realllllly want to be in the 13'* this year.

Wow my old '98 is still in 12th place.
She had 1.9'*, headers, 3.4, PCM, and other minor mods.

I won't do nitrous again. I have experience with it and its not something I'd want to dive into again (it was fun though).

Looks like most people are leaning towards the cam, but I got a quote from Intense recently and its not something I can just pay in a lump sum. Maybe I'll start slowly on the trans buildup, but a diff and input shaft comes out to the same (if not more) price of a cam install.

I'm not about to take out a loan to buy car parts. I find that too selfish. Maybe Intense can start providing payment methods? lol

I think at this point it might have to wait another year, so my trip to Intense this summer will probably just be a tuneup to get rid of any KR and clean up the blower.

When I do it again, it'll be a cam instead of the rockers. Just my opinion.

Rockers are easier and cheaper, with fewer necessary supporting mods. Cam is more expensive, but lends itself to even more potential horsepower from other mods, beyond what the rockers can do.
I have 1.9s right now, by the end of the year, I will have an S1X.

i got the 1.9'*. cam = more power, more work, less gas mileage, different sound, different driveability.(in my opinion). 1.9'* = easy install, no change in driveability or gas mileage, no tuning required, decent power gain. im in the 13'*. since then i got a 3.2", ported blower housing, PRJ fuel rails, 42.5# injectors(havent installed these yet). im sure i will be able to do at least a mid to low 13. and i still get 20+ MPG average.

8Ball is still a daily driver last I checked with Todd, so I'm not too worried about driveability being a problem with a cam.

ya, i agree. driveability wasn't really the deterant for me either. it was the pain of installation and the few MPG loss that changed my mind. with gas prices these days i really didnt want to change that for my DD. if i had another car then it would be a different story. i prolly woulda done it. it does have more potential and more power over a broader RPM band.

Even with my cam my gas mileage isn't bad; my mileage in the city isn't great with the 3k stall and heavy foot. But a few weeks ago I got 27mpg with 4 guys in the car and a full trunk going down to Columbus doing about 75mph the whole way. Drivability isn’t an issue at all, granted my car doesn’t idle as smooth as it used to, the idle isn’t not bad at all.

The deciding factor for most in the cam vs. rockers decision is the difficulty in installing a cam vs. rockers.
