Default MORE EXHAUST antics! (...long read, good drawing...)

Yesterday I pondered more about how to get the exhaust project wrapped up.
I came up with a plan and drew it on paper to run by the 'muffler guy', who promptly rolled his eyes, hemmed and hawed, passed it onto the 'installation guy', who mimicked the boss...I wasn't thrilled.
Off to another shop where the guy showed interest but said I should go to the shop up north where the guy 'likes to do this kind of stuff'. :o
This morning I went to a very local shop that'* been there so long my Dad used to go there. I showed him the plan and we discussed it. He had me drive the SSE onto the platform and we put it up in the air to look around and make a few decisions. I appreciated his effort and time.
My plan was good in theory and we went from there to what will be done.
He came up with the idea of cutting off the muffler and tips AS A UNIT, so he could cut a slice into the top of the tips at an angle and drop in and weld a piece of steel to deflect some of the gases toward the inner part of the resonator tips, making BOTH tips functional, as opposed to only the outer ones. INGENIOUS!
This would allow him to work freely on the bench as opposed to having to mess with the parts on the car. Good idea. I like this guy already.
Next, we looked at the magic CHERRY BOMB. 2 1/4" in and out; 23" overall with the perforated core body being 3 1/2" diameter with the 2 1/4" core. After looking at the location I was thinking about, he suggested we install it BEHIND the Cat. This would give a deeper tone and cut out the farty noises and raspy tones I'm trying to eliminate.
He said the farther back in the system, the more raspy it would be, and that'* why so many of our systems have that noise. The muffler is WAY BACK THERE. Finally, an answer to my questions.
He also said my idea of keeping the perforated core was good, as the MagnaFlow muffler and ANSA tips also have perforated cores...
At the location we're putting it in, the muffler should last a bit longer (not much) than if I went with the louvered style with the louvers pointed INTO the exhaust. Louvers pointed AWAY from the exhaust will help the muffler last longer, but will be louder.
The perforated core will absorb sound well enough while not interfering with the already reduced size of the core.
The area behind the Cat is just long enough for this particular CHERRY BOMB. It WILL require a slight reduction in the pipe size from 2 1/2" down to 2 1/4". That'* acceptable. It will help keep the backpressure up a bit.
That'* where I'm at on this. Next week it looks like I'll be getting sound/video clips of before and after. Can't wait.

Hehe, i'd just rather go for a throatier, smoother sound like a flowmaster anyways.

:P

It'* OK to poke fun, I can handle it.
I'm on a mission here and I'll keep at it 'til it'* done right.

Pay attention, BOYZ.
The RICE sound comes from having the muffler too far back in the system.
As stated originally, a perforated core is the common feature for the 'resonator'/muffler/tips.
The CHERRY BOMB is the ONLY muffler with the PERFORATED CORE that would fit.
I'd researched a Thrush muffler that had the perforated core, but, it was too long for my application.
Spending MORE $$$ on a 'resonator' that wasn't there to begin with is $tupid. $20.00 is $mart money!

If you looked at the diagram and read what the Professional Installer said, you'll understand why Bonnevilles get ratty/raspy noises from ANY muffler back there save for the stock ones.
My preference for the MagnaFlow was for its solid construction and perforated core straight through design, as opposed to the DynoMax and FlowMaster, which I've heard or had and just don't care for.
The designs of both of those mufflers are not as solid as the MagnaFlow.
They both sound good on some cars or with some engines. I chose not to use them for my system.

The fart tubes on ricers sound that way because they remove a restrictive muffler further up the system or replace it at the rear with low restriction 'mufflers'.
As described by the man at the muffler shop today.

You've heard on the Forum here what it sounds like when you remove Cats or run a straight pipe under the car into a muffler at the back.
If you've GOT a resonator on your car --- mine never had one---then perhaps ANY of the three big name mufflers mentioned would sound good.
With NO resonator, you get FART.

I don't care what kind of power you're making, if the exhaust isn't tuned somehow, you'll get the FART/BLAT sound with only a muffler at the rear of the car.
I MIGHT still get it when the old school CHERRY BOMB goes in. I hope not, but, it'* possible.

This is an expensive homework session intended to benefit not only me, but you guys that are looking into changing your exhaust.
You may learn from my mistakes...I hope so, anyway, 'cuz I AM!!!

That should explain further what is being attempted in my system.
RICE isn't acceptable.

Cherry Bombs sound good, from what I've heard. My uncle has a 1942 *****'* (it'* a small pickup with big wide fenders), with cherry bombs on there, but he was basiclly running open headers, loud as heck. Small block 400 in there pushing around 325-350 HP in a 1800 LB. truck.

Hey BusMaster, I think you are on the right track.
I'd be surprised if your car didn't come original with a resonator after the CAT.
That'* what a resonator does....reduces or eliminates the Fart sound.
V6 engines are never going to sound like a V8.
Most Ricer motors are V6 or inline 4'*. If you follow their example, your V6 with sound exactly the same. Farty. Hey, some guys like farty sounds.
The whole key is reducing backpressure but the trade off is more noise.
Most low restriction aftermarket mufflers, like Borla'* for instance, are nothing more than a Cherry bomb straight through perforated pipe with a larger can for sound tuning.
That'* really how any sound attenuating device works. It'* based on the displacement of the engine to calculate the volume of the can.
Gun silencers work on a similar principal. The noise you hear is actually the sudden expansion of air as it exits the gun barrel. If you provide a larger chamber just after the barrel, it absorbs the sound.
Go with headers and a low restriction CAT and leave the mufflers alone. You will get a much better (quieter) bang for the buck that way.
Take the CAT off altogether, if you can get away with it.

Don't want to try to get a 'V-8' sound.
Just want to 'suppress' the noise, like you mentioned about the 'sound suppressor' on a firearm.
The Cat has to stay to be compliant with Federal Law.
The '92 didn't come with a resonator.
Don't think headers are available for the '92, either. Don't want 'em on this car. Too much hassle.
The free flow should be maintained with what I'm trying here, with a little bit of growl.
Hoping the fart disappears altogether.

Anybody have the factory part #'* for those mufflers?
I wonder what they look like INSIDE.
