Do you ever use the oil percentage display on the DIC. It tells you how much good your oil is. At 5000 I'm down to around 20-25 percent "normal." If you ride it down to 6%, I think it is, then it starts flashing to change the oil. That would probably be around 6000 miles. Still, if you change the filter at 4k, then maybe it will allow another 2k miles before hitting the 6%.

i had the oil analyzed twice , once at 25000 again
at 57000 oil was not even close to being dirty after 8000 miles
your "GM oil life syetem" is based on egine revolations and
engine temperature not on how clean or dirty your oil is
the only way to know how good or bad your oil is , is to have
it analyzed .
p.*. cost about $30.00

Just curious!
ps. I only ask becaue I want to get the most out of my oil, but even more importantly, I want my engine to last until the cows come home, if you know what I mean.
Kevo, there'* an independent analysis running right now. MANY thousands of miles. I've lost track of the link, but last I heard they were over 20k miles, and the oil was still better than dinosaur juice at 3k.
ALOT of independent research has been done on this.
