Default increasing exhaust flow

Willwren, suggested I focus on increasing air/fuel flow through the motor. I have what I think is a good idea to that end and could use a fresh perspective. I replaced my muffler with a good glass pack. I now notice that between the cat and my new glass pack is What appears to be a long oem glass pack. Is that what it is? And what would be the affect of replacing it with a straight pipe? Kris

That is the resonator. It keeps the noise down. Probably best to keep it unless you want extra raspyness.

Muffler replacement, contrary to popular belief, does NOTHING for performance on these cars.

If you need to make any one change to the exhaust, it is to the cat converter. Over time, they become restrictive. After that is done, work on the exhaust manifolds. Is your front exhaust manifold cracked? That'* a big pain in our necks...not only does it create a little noise, it also induces KR...false KR at that...which in turn, cuts power.

Now...see what I am getting at? Money on a muffler, unless you WANT more noise, or actually needed to be replaced, is wasted money. That same money is better spent on, ahem, maintainence and upkeep of what you already have. That'* my fi-low-sof-eee anyways.

Put a set of PEMs on, it'* a low price addition. It'* a bit of work, figure on 4 or 5 hours, if not more. Have on hand, all gaskets, and studs. Get all studs with penitrating oil. Give them a shot every few days or so. Do this for several weeks, well worth the effort.

PEM'* aren't necessary on a 94. Series 1 manifolds are already ported properly from the factory:

Removing them and inspect for cracks is good. You need to remove all 3 heatshields and inspect VERY closely.

After those are in good shape, a set of rockers would be a good move along with a high-flow cat. Using a glasspack for a muffler isn't a good choice for another reason. They don't last. Not only did it do nothing for performance, but it won't sound very good in a year or two.

Keep the factory resonator and add a high-flow cat. Opening your exhaust up too much will kill low end torque on the L27.
