Default GXP Intake question

For those of you with GXP'* (Northstar engine) I have a question about the intake. Shortly after buying the car I wanted to change the air filter to a K&N but upon opening the airbox I noticed that most of the box is just silencer area and less than half is actually used by filter material. In fact its the same size as my 94 GP'* 3100 air filter?!?!? :? . I also noticed a small tube in the middle of the box that I'm guessing directs air into the second chamber where the filter actually sits. The Stock box looks restrictive as all hell and will be removed shorty but for the time being I removed that small tube. The car sounds a little harsher / louder to me but it could just be my imagination. Any thoughts as to what that tube could be for?

Also there is a second tube that is outside the airbox that comes off the plastic section which sits directly on top of the filter. I've tried to look and see where it runs but cant see where it leads to. Its about an inch in diameter and heads down from the airbox underneath the car out of sight.

to tube leading down to the bottom is probably for the engine to get some fresh, cool air. Take some pics and we will have a better idea of what you are talking about.
