Default FWI Conversion...

As some of you may know, previously I was saddled with a warm air intake like so:

(No pics because cardomain won't load...oddly.

However, I converted it to this:



It was easy to tell that my previous setup was doing nothing more than drawing in hot engine air, save for the small amount of cool air coming in through the ram air duct. Now, it'* getting pure cold air. I have been wanting an FWI for some time, but found the Intense price to be too steep for my tastes. Total cost for my conversion: $0. And it'* solid, I took it for a drive and everything worked exactly as it should.

The difference? I don't know. It'* insanely hot and humid here so the differences between the engine bay and outside aren't as significant as they would be in cooler weather. I was stuck with the impression that the engine was cold...as in when I first start the car in the morning...even though it wasn't. Perhaps that is what I was really feeling, the difference in power. I also THINK I was able to hear the engine more for some reason, it'* hard to tell over my exhaust.

Anyway, my project is functional but it'* not pretty. I need some help and ideas to get it finished and looking nice. Here'* one of my biggest problems:



The EVAP canister and the PCM. The PCM is currently not in it'* box, because the box as-is takes up too much room. Not to worry though....NOTHING rusts here. The underside of my car looks brand new. I don't know why, but rust doesn't occur easily in my climate unless things sit out in the open rain for a long time.

Anyway, I need ideas on how to better mount those without having to buy anything if possible...I have various bolts, drills, hacksaw, etc...(though my drill won't cut through the body of the car, I don't think).

Ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I think your biggest issue is how convoluted (rough) the tubing is. That'* hurting performance at this point.

Something better for cheap? Gutted airbox and drop-in replacement K&N filter.

I think INTENSE sells smooth-walled tubing by the foot if you want to replace that in the future.

Can't do the airbox, I'm missing most of the parts to remount it. I have the box itself and indeed, a drop in fiter...but I'm missing too many things for that.

I saw the Intense tubing, problem is my current intake is set up to connect with 3" tubing, not 3.5"...I don't know how I'd route my IAT sensor or connect to the filter with the 3.5" tubing.

Maybe I should run down to Advance Auto this evening and see what they've got in 3"...

Why can't you get a stepped coupler? I think some companies makes couplers that has 3.5" at one end and 3" at the other end, I can't recall the website that sold them...

Thanks for the info, but tell me honestly...which would be more beneficial, stepping down to a 3" with my current setup or simply ordering an FWI from Intense when I can actually afford it?

Problem is, I can't spend much at all right now...I just had to lay out over $500 for books this semester, and I have more expenses on the way. If it'* over $10 and out of my "necessary" list of spending, I can't afford it.

I am hopefully going to be co-opping next semester, and when (if) that happens I'll be able to afford the FWI. Or at least be able to afford the tubing and step-down adapters. If the co-op doesn't work out, I'll just have to deal with it as-is until my current job works out a little better. I'm overloaded with homework, and finding time to actually get into work and make money for myself is getting harder and harder.

It'* very stressful.

Basically what it comes down to is that I'm stuck with what I've got...for now. I know it'* not the best, it'* certainly not the best looking...but there'* nothing I can do about it right now.

Best thing I can do right now is try to secure those odds and ends that I had to remove so that when I finally do get the FWI, my engine won't look like it'* held together with string...

That looks a lot like what I was facing. Most can't tell it'* not stock since I finished. Hopefully this gives you some ideas.
