Default Dynoing GTP on the 1st, guesses??? UPDATED W/NUMBERS!

First off, I was not sure what section to post this in so if the mods feel it doesn't belong here please feel free to move it.

Okay back to the post. We are going to be taking the GTP to the dyno on the first for the MIGPC dyno day. We dynoed it about a year ago, but it was done at a dyno which ZZP claims reads almost 5% low. The car also had basically no tuning done, and it was done with the old 3000 stall protorque torque convertor which has been slipping since the car had 1.9 rockers in it. (probably would've run 11'* with rockers had we known thats what the problem was at that time)

As for mods nothing has really been done to the car. We switched from Autolite 103 plugs to Autolite AR103 plugs. No other mods have been done other than some slight modification to the intercooler, and the installation of a 2500 stall ZZP torque convertor to replace the slipping 3000 stall protorque. Plus the trans fluid was flushed and replaced with Dextron 6 which apparantly is supposed to reduce power loss. We have also done a little tuning but we are going to go out tommarrow with the car and try to get it tuned in a little better. It had ~960 O2'* on the dyno before which is way rich. It pulled 334.3whp like that, and with 1000 O2'* it pulled 317whp so you can see what difference leaning it out makes. We are going to try to run right around 890-900 O2'*.

Keep in mind the car still has completely stock heads (never been off the engine) besides the springs & retainers, and it also still has a Gen 3 M90 (although it is a Stage 4 ported M90). What are your guesses for the dyno? The car will probably be running ~25 degrees of timing and a 2.55" pulley. (the same timing and pulley combo as last year)

Personally I don't see why the car shouldn't pull 350whp and that is what we are shooting for. Based on the cars condition at the last dyno and since the dyno was known to read low, I think it should be able to do at least that, but I'm actually hoping for around 360whp. The only limitation I am seeing is that the car is still running the stock heads and a Gen 3 and they just don't flow too well. That might prevent it from hitting 350, but just the difference in dynos should give the increase to almost 350whp.

So I'd like to hear your opinions on what you guys think it will pull.

It'* hard to tell with this car..... hopefully you changed the things that were at the root of the problems. Taking everything into account, and allowing for the number of pregnant rats in China, I would have to say it will do 350-355 whp. Either that or eleventy billion.

No offense but Zooomer is always saying the dynos they use read low and the "magic" dyno we use reads way to high. If it is the same style of dyno (ie dynotune or mustang) as the one you did last year and conditions are the same, plugs and a converter are not going to help a same gear pull. My vote is for roughly the same power.

I hope you do make more power though Good luck!

Everyone was dynoing lower than they expected and even the dyno operator said that it didn't seem like the numbers were right. There were also some cars that dyno consistantly the same that weren't as high as they should've been, and cars that dynoed elsewhere the next week that hit numbers more along the lines of what they were expecting. This also is not a dyno ZZP regularly uses they were just there becuase they usually bring a few cars to the MIGPC dyno day. The only reason I mentioned ZZP at all is because they said that from what they could tell that dyno seemed to be about 5% low.

A convertor that isn't slipping should definately help the dyno number as well, how wouldn't it? The other torque convertor was bad and was slipping under load. Obviously this means all the power isn't being put to the ground, so replacing it with a convertor that wasn't bad would give a larger output to the tires. Not to mention the newer convertor is a lower stall which means it slips less anyways, meaning less power loss to the ground.

But taking all that out of the picture about the dyno being off and the convertor and whatnot, and just take into accound what just tuning the car should give for a gain. The only tuning that was done to achieve the 334whp number was leaning it out like 2% IIRC with a mini-afc 1.0. The 02'* were in the 960 range like I said which is way too rich, and leaning it down to 960 from 1000 brought power levels from 317whp to 334. Dropping the 02'* down to the 890-900 range should definately improve on that especially since the tuning won't be done with a mini-afc 1.0 either.

Like I said, all I'm realistically expecting is around 350whp, but I wouldn't be surprised if it hit close to 360whp. More than that and I'd definately be suprised though.

Shawn,

I wish I could take a stab at it, but I havent dynoed mine. Let me know when you dyno it tho, I like to see were the number fall. And honestly I hope it does dyno 350+.
You gonna dyno the GT too? I've always wanted to know what kind of mad horses that thing had.

Yeah, I'll definately post the number when we dyno it. We've taken it out a few times in the last few days (been sitting all winter so its about damn time!) and it runs REALLY GOOD! I am actually impressed at how much better it runs with a torque convertor that isn't slipping. It doesn't hit the rev limiter before shifts and doesn't just free rev in the middle of gears like it did before. Much nicer. We actually had the shift points raised since it isn't hitting the limiter anymore. It was shifting at between 6250 & 6300 on a good day before when it didn't seem like it was slipping (most of the time it would slip noticably and bang the 6800rpm limiter before shifting), and before we raised the shift points it was shifting at ~6100 with the new convertor. Now its back up to around 6350 which with the XP cam seems about right. We raised each shift 1mph IIRC.

Anyways, yes I will be dynoing the GT. Not sure on what it will make but I put my guess in as 172whp. (MIGPC gives away a prize to the person with the closest guess to what their car actually puts out without going over) I don't think it will make that much but it probably isn't too far off that. We'll see. I might not dyon it if my STE is fixed by then though, I have no idea what kind of power that puts out so if it has a new trans in by then I'm definately gonna dyno it.

Dynoed the GTP and the GT.

The GTP pulled 340.6whp at ~6300rpm. I looked it up on club GP and from what I can find that is the highest horsepower for a stock heads, Gen 3 M90 L67. The record before this was 340.4 . We did this tuning with a mini-afc 1.0. We were also running 8* added timing which was around 23* max timing. Plus a 2.55" pulley. Had we had a 2.5" pulley we would've tried it but we didn't have one. We dynoed with the borla exhaust on (the borla is 2.25") and the best it pulled was 335, and when we dropped the exhaust it gave an instant 5whp.

As for the GT I didn't do any tuning of any sort. I scanned it a week before the dyno and it got a little over 5* of KR. So before I went to the dyno I put premium in it and that was the only thing at all I did. I was expecting power in the low-mid 160'* at most, so I guessed 172 so I wouldn't go over, but that didn't work. The car pulled 178.3whp, and at the time it had 205,7XX miles on it. I thought that was very impressive. A guy with all my mods plus an electric water pump, a PCM, rockers, and a 3" downpipe pulled 178.7whp a few days ago so I'm thinking I'm doing pretty good. I don't really plan on doing much more for mods, maybe just a PCM and possibly some ER rockers, but other than that for now it will pretty much stay how it is.

Nice numbers, especially on the GT! You're probably going to embarass me with my dyno pulls at Intense!

Great numbers on the GT. Thats HumPerformance at work . 178hp with less than $100 in mods.

Not to bad for the GTP either, I know you were hoping for more. But a record is a record. It doesnt matter if you win by an inch or mile, winning is winning! Sorry I've always wanted to say that.

Stoney and I were joking about that earlier. (the hum performance thing) We figured it must just be the trans with extra low power loss or something. Anyways, the car runs VERY well and I couldn't be happier with it. I have less than $100 in mods done to it, and combined with what you spent (I would guess about similar between exhaust an intake) altogether its less than $200 in mods. Still a very respectable number for that kind of money.
