The exhaust manifold was welded so as not to leak, but the exhaust pipe was so bad that it had to be replaced. No one charged me for either a cat or a muffler.

So you have 3" piping and 2.5" cat and muffler? No wonder they didn't charge you. You have the most inefficient flowing exhaust on this forum.
