Laser rangefinder. Feedback to the cruise. It'* been toyed with by the manufacturers. If someone were creative enough, you could build your own. The trick would be to have 3 lasers all pointing forward. Make sure you were seeing the car ahead correctly. If one laser return wasn't detected, it would still have 2 more to pick up. Molding dips, holes, etc could all disrupt the return.

humm.. with all this talks about sensors and stuff.. would there be some kinda delay to reflect real life environment like heavy rain, snow, fog, blowing leaves ( from us Dumb *** that has to deal with winter )

an interface into the control unit would work, where you could program the distance. I read an article in PopSci magazine awhile back and the big names in luxury cars have these coming out on thier cars pretty soon.
