Yes, it runs poorly right from start up. Doesn't matter if it'* cold or hot. No power when it'* hot or cold, either.

I could likely buy a used PCM from the bone yard. They have a return policy. What would have to change for the EPROM? I'm not even sure what EPROM stands for!

I can come up with another PCM.
I just hate to see money spen on something that is not the problem... But in your case the PCM may be bad... Its hard to say...

It would have been good to see all of the info thast the Tech 1 or Tech 2 was seeing from the PCM... Might have given us some ideas....

The EPROM ( Eraseable Programable Read Only Memory ) Chip, is something like the Mem-Cals you hear about for the 88-93 3800'*.... But a bit newer...

If you were to get a junkyard PCM, you would want to swap out the EPROM chip... Unless you found the same kind of car as the one you have...

I'm still baffled... By any chance is the exahust plugged?

And I still wish I was next door.... we would have tested the PCM 20 minutes ago...LOL
I'm not putting much faith in the exhaust. It pops and girgles. I attributed it to the poor running style. You can feel the popping with your hand by simply putting your hand a couple inches from the tail pipe. You can also see the entire exhaust system shaking while just idling. And if your foot is on the brake while in gear, the car shakes on the inside.

What'* involved in testing the PCM? I could mail it to you! This car won't be a daily driver until it'* running right.

I've been doing a lot of searching and I see a lot of talk about the crank position sensor causing similar behaviors to what I have going on.

What do you think? And, how tough is it to pull the harmonic balancer? And once that'* off, what do I do next? Just unscrew it and install the new one?

Yes, I agree tomorrow will prove a lot.

I'm just thinking of ideas beyond the PCM. It starts every time, without fail...hot or cold. Will run like garbage hot or cold too!

Do a small test ans swap the coils from the 99, and see if that makes any diffrence at all..

Its free and worth a shot, will only cost you a few minutes...

And on top of that, if the PCM would not talk to the Tech II, shouldn't they have used a Tech I? This is an OBDI car with an OBD2 connector if memory serves...

But anyhoe try swaping the coils from the 99 and see if it makes any diffrence..
just an FYI - they can hook the tech2 up to just about anything. the one I used to use was programmed for 92-06 vehicles. you just need the right cable, and it'll take care of the rest...

Yes, and it runs just as poorly in Neutral as it does in Park, Drive, 3, 2, or 1.

Well that pretty well sucks. Have you tried running open exhaust?

If so, the next thing I'd try is pulling the plugs, and see what kind of arc you get across them while turning the engine over (ground it to the block, and don't hold it with bare hands ).
