Default Moonroof noises, slipping, and other general problems

Hey guys. So Im going to be taking out my headliner to fix it up a bit and I figured it was time for some moonroof love too.

So my problems are:

1. When I push the toggle to rasie/lower the roof it grinds in certain areas, Im assuming this is a gear that may be stripped.

2. The roof will not go down far enough to slide back into the main roof, it stops alittle short.

Im guessing I need to replace the motor for that first one. Will this come in being expensive? and is it a big pain?

From what Ive read from a search around here my 88 Toronado Trofeo has the same sunroof setup as the Bonnie

Default H body

first of all, you're in "other H bodies" , you probably would have better luck with someone running across this if you put it in the specific year of the bonneville that it is... also, nobody has a clue what year bonneville you have because you didn't specify???? we can't help you if we don't know what you have! sorry!

It'* not a Bonneville, which is why it'* here (in the correct location). This is to prevent confusion, and clearly identify it as something else for troubleshooting purposes.

I would seriously doubt a Trofeo moonroof is the same as a Bonneville. There should be a size difference at the very least. Have you tried cleaning and lubing the tracks, gears, and pivots?

Default clarification

hmmm, i guess i can see that it'* not a bonneville after reading both of those posts.... but that last line was pretty confusing. it was never stated what kind of car it was, but in the last line it was stated that the moonroof in a toronado was the same as a bonneville..maybe.

my mistake. i used to install sunroofs for a living, and did a lot of repairs. the motor should be on the front side of that car. i don't recall if the gear is removeable or not. it sounds like the drive cables/drive gear need to be replaced. a specialty shop that deals with moonroofs should be able to get you the parts you need.

My main concern is is this going to be a project that I will be able to do on my own with general tools? Ive got good technical skills but Im not a certified mechanic by any means. Im just concerned wether or not I should even start on the project.
