Your 17, you have $3k, what kinda car would you buy???
I have a little while here, but in the spring, probably May or June I will be looking for another car. I am planning on keeping the STE and driving it on the side, and maybe in the winter depending on what this car is that I get. However, I will have around $3k to spend by then, because I'll be getting ~$800 back in taxes, and then I'll be selling my Calais or parting it out for around $500, plus some i have in savings, and what I will have added to savings by then. However, the problem is, I have no idea what kind of car I want. I want something that is gonna be reliable, but quick, but yet will take my abuse pretty well. I was thinking about late 80'*/early 90'* Camaro Z28. I like how they look and with a small block chevy and a 4 speed auto, what could I break? And if I broke something, it would be cheap to fix. Basically, I'm looking for a cheap car that I can go out on the backroads and beat the **** out of, yet still drive to work if the need arises, and I want RWD. I really wouldn't need anything faster than a 15 second car, although faster would be better. My STE would be my dragstrip car, so I really don't need anything super fast.
But, just lets say you're in my position, and your looking for a cheap, fast, fun, reliable, RWD car to drive around, what would you look at? I don't know where to start. I thought I wanted to save up for something with an L67, but anything that I'll be able to afford with an L67 is gonna be about ready to blow a tranny with my luck, or is just gonna be close to worn out with those kinda miles on it. And going with something with an L67 is not gonna give me much change from my STE, yeah its gonna have a different engine, but it'll still be a midsized FWD family car.

Im not sure. I would probably get a SUV, but 3k is not much for a reliable truck thats relatively new, so I dont know. What do you want? Sedan, coupe,etc...

Personally, I am saving up for a '96 Firebird. RWD, 5-speed, and the first year of the Series-II in an f-body. I've always really like the 3rd gen camaros and trans ams and I would like a V8, but I couldn't afford the insurance or pay for gas (the way i drive). That'* why I'm going for the V6. My car is fun to drive now, so I can only imagine a lighter car with a Series-II.
I'd say a 3rd gen Camaro is great for what you are looking for, and since you want an automatic you can get the 350 TPI, those are quick cars. I'm with you on the whole RWD thing, but f-bodies are definitly not winter cars.
Whatever you go with, good luck.

1997 SSEi. oh you said RWD.
I will have to second the camaro/firebird if you wanted more in the performance area. Even a 3800 powered one would not be that bad if insurance was an issue.
Maybe a mustang if it was taken care of.
But then you said reliable and none of the above RWD mentions are going to be super reliable.
If you decided you did not have to have RWD, there are A LOT more options.
