Wow, gm'* quality really slipped in the later years.
In the transmission department.
00 Alero, 3.4 V6 4T45-E trans
when i first got it at 52k last march it had a wierd shudder on the 1-2 that the trans shop couldnt pinpoint, went away with a fluid change.
Fast forward to this week and 77k the 1-2 and the OD lockup are really long and drawn out and scary unless the pedal is to the floor then it shifts with a little more confidance. changed fluid, acutally made the problem worse
In the words of the trans shop, its not gonna make it to 100k.
Though on the suprising UPSIDE, a used 4t45e with 80k can be had for $75 63k for $100. Cheap *** transmissions.
Also this is a continuing long line of trans problems for me
90 sse, bad shifts real bad shudder into reverse
90 se, lost everything but 1st and reverse
97 mitsubishi mirage, bad leak and unable to coast at slower speeds because the trans would lock into 1st and engine brake the car :?
94 cherokee, decided to dump half its trans fluid on the exhaust on the highway at 95mph @ wot and then never leaked a drop again, another trans that confused the hell out of the trans shop
98 mercury mystique, bad slam on all shifts eventually lost 2nd and 4th gear.
And franky with the 97 4T65-E HD trans and its pressure control solenoid failing and taking the trans with it.

You gotta think about the abuse a transmission takes, compared to the rest of any car. The engineers have to do their best to provide smooth shifts, reliability, gas mileage, etc, while taking into account they way most people drive.
Unfortunately, that means they have to lean more towards the people that think 35 is an appropriate merging speed coming off an on ramp, or that idle pull is enough to get you started through a traffic light. Not so much those of us who like to get on it every once in a while, merge safely on the highway, or make the occasional run at the track...
Still, it sucks when it happens to you. Good luck getting her fixed..
