Ok, These are great little engines... And eventhough I love the 3800, the 3100'* are notorious for longevity...
They do have some liter tick at start up, and like its beeen said thats normal...
Some do have some piston slapp issues... Usually this will go away as the engine begins to warm up... The 97 weren't cured of this issue, but by then if memory serves all of the 97 and later 3100'* were using teflon coated piston skirts to help avoid piston slapp/scuff..
They also have intake gaskets issues... But thats something you can repair on your own Vital...
Eventhough these engines have these problems, I wouldn't let it scare me away unless it was severely abused or dogged out...
Is this a car that you are seriously considering? Also it should have the 4T60-E with the 3.33 gear ratio.... Should be a pretty fun little car to drive... And wait till you hear that 3100 climb in the rev department... You'll like it... trust me...

Thanks for the replies guys.
I've driven a 3100 before, just not the one in this car. This car just makes me nervous because of the mileage. Honestly, I've never really put much faith into the 3100. It does have the 4T60-E. I had to reschedule the appointment for tomorrow. I'll let everyone know the update. I'm just looking for a spare car, so I'll see how much I can bang him up on the price!

That Olds Achieva should be a decent lil puddle jumper for ya.
Not very high marks in the styling department, but if the 3100 is in good shape it should be a decent car for you. Olds is notorious for getting the most out of its transmisson in the gear ratio department.
The fun factor is very high

Yeah, you have one of the few cars Ben doesn't make a chip for. You could probably contact him and become a beta tester, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to go to him in Indiana. I'm pretty sure he makes chips for other 3100'*, so I find it hard to believe that he couldn't get you a basic chip. PM him on the 60* boards...IIRC his username is sappyse107.

Shawn,
Didn't the W Bodies 93,94,95 still use a Mem-Cal Chip in the PCM...? I wonder what the diffrences may be between the 93-94 models...
I know we are off topic...lol
