What kind of fluid do you put in a manual tranny?

What kind of fluid do you put in a manual tranny?
Is the fluid red and will the tranny still work with no fluid in there cause my friends camaro we think has a tranny leak (very big) and we gota know if thats from his car or a different car so he can go home its red liquid

generally for a manual tranny I would only run GL-5 gear oil..check with the manufactuer if your unsure.
