It took me forever to get back in here. Is the server messing up?

Yea I've been noticing the server has been "slow" to "stopped" sometimes.... are we getting too big for our server/connection?

Jeff hooked up the server on a big *** fatty pipe to a protected server in FLA, must be server maintenance issues

Server maintenance issues? As the server administrator, I resent that

I noticed the sporadic availability problems around the noon hour today. I took a peek at the server'* vital signs and can definitely say that it is not an issue with the server itself. I suspect a problem somewhere in the network connection. Hopefully the problem will go away on its own, but I'll keep an eye on it.

The slowness is a completely different issue. Fortunately, it'* easily solved. The site is becoming more and more database intensive at the same time that the database is growing larger and larger. Unfortunately, we've gone beyond the available physical memory in the server, so now it needs to swap quite often. Swapping causes a direct performance hit, so things are going slower. It will be upgraded soon.

Update on the situation:

It appears that the periodic outages are because of DOS traffic, perhaps related to the Windows NT/2k/XP worm that is currently circling the globe. This server is running Linux, so it is not vulnerable to infection; however, bandwidth consumption is bandwidth consumption, no matter the payload.

Everybody, patch your computers!!! Home users included!!! If you notice your computer restarting itself because of RPC failures, you're most likely infected.

For the patch, look at:

For a free disinfection program, look at:

Our university is infected bad. Not my computer, but several throughout the university--including the secretary in our department. ssesc93 sent a repair before this was posted...we are on the way to recovery.

Thank you very much ssesc93 and Teuobk!
