Update on my new favorite gas pump..
Well Today I go in pay cash for $10 and start pumping.
This time when it hits $10 it keeps pumping but...
It also keeps counting...bummer I hit now $11 and went in and gave them the extra $1.
Asked him if he programmed $10 or ?? He said ya that pump need to be fixed it is not stopping ....ah..oh well..I suppose they found the leak and fixed the pump to keep counting.
Well If I go in and pay for $10 and it goes to $20 do I really owe them the extra $10 or is it there problem because the pump wont shut off?
POLL 2 SAGA>>>LOL !!!

Legally yes you would have to pay the difference. Not paying for your gas is illegal. So regardless of how it happened, you are still responsible to pay attention and only take what you paid for.

Really you are supposed to be right there watching it anyways so even if it does go over technically you would be at fault regardless of the auto stop system working or not. Same if the auto stop doesn't work and you are in the car while pumping and your tank fills then dumps 10 gallons on the ground, your responsibility. I would never trust a pump to just stop at what I prepaid, I would try to shut it off myself beforehand unless I noticed it make a definite slowdown in pumping speed when getting close to the prepaid amount, even then I would be paying close attention to when it gets up to the amount.

Agreed. I had this happen recently. I paid $30, then went to pump the gas. It never stopped, and it went over $30. I just put in another $1 worth, and went back inside. It was busy, and I handed the clerk another $1 and asked what happened. I had given them $40, and got $10 back, but they put the entire $40 on the pump somehow. Mistakes happen, and they apologized. But you're still responsible. Just like in the other thread. They have cameras on you. Just because they are behind a counter doesn't mean they aren't watching what you're doing. If you paid for $30, and kept standing out there with the pump in your hand after it was supposed to shut off, you don't think they are going to notice? Clerks are used to looking out for weird behavior, since the potential for theft or robbery is pretty high in some places.

You pay for what you pump. Go under, get refund, go over pay the cashier.

What if you leave the pump to check your oil and the automatic shut off doesnt work like its supposed to and dumps 10 bucks on the ground?
Should they pay you for that?

Just curious cause i seen it happen.

You still pay because you are always supposed to be right there to attend the pump. Some states completely remove any clips that hold the pump on when someone walks away just for this reason. This way you absolutely have to be right there to pump any gas. A couple states also don't even let you pump your own fuel.
