Crap! our washing machine didn't drain and it kept filling and filling and filling....over the top and all in the basement. Luckily we just cleaned the basement and put most things up or in plastic tubs...WHEW! Anyway I don't know anything about wash machines, but the spin cycle doesn't start, so my brain says the motor failed.....
Guess we can get a new one, but then we need a matching dryer.....
HA...now my wife wants to paint the walls and floor since we took everything out to vac up the water....
Thank you for listening

It sounds as if the sensor that tells when the tub is full has gone bad. You can check out this site for parts, and help solving common problems.

is it Whirlpool? Older Whirlpools and Kenmores run the pump for a predetermined amount of time to drain. The pump may have failed, 20 bux or so for that, and there is also a rubber coupling that engages motor to transmission thats famous for breaking. Usually happens on Sunday night when you need your best slacks and shirt washed LOL. Don't know about recent model Whirlpool and Kenmore though.
If its Maytag, I can't beleive it broke lol. If GE, surprised if it lasted a year.

My parents' recently replaced a washer that wasn't draining (Whirlpool Calypso, FWIW). They had other issues with it before, and my mom was unsastisfied with the performance as it was, so they bought a new one. Turns out, when dad pulled it apart later to see if he could fix it and sell it, the drain was so plugged with shreds from a small rug, it wouldn't drain. The washer was smart enough to stop running to avoid other problems.
Well, if it didn't drain, and then spun expecting the water to go away, it may have over stressed the transmission, burnt a band, or the motor. Or it sensed an issue and refuses to go any further to prevent damage. Those are my guesses.

Well, I am not the type to try to fix it and have it fill and spill water over again because I replaced the wrong part and have to suck all the H2O off the floor and out of the washer again with my 6 gallon shop vac only to replace another part , then a week has passed and it is still not working.
My time is worth more than that. It will cost me 200 for a repair guy to come out and fix it if its a motor, so we will spent $400.00 on a new one.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I have researched all the DIY sites and wasn't convinced I could fix it...
