I used to donate blood, but you can only do that once like every 8 weeks. When I found out I could donate plasma locally 2 times a week, I was all over it. I get paid $50 a week for doing it, which ends up being about $20/hr for how long it takes. It sure helps pay the gas bills, and I know its saving lots of lives at the same time. I took these pics if anyone is interested to see how it works.

Here is a shot across the room, I usually go pretty late in the day when there are not that many people there

Here is a shot of them taking my blood

Here is a shot of the machine that gets the plasma. Plasma is a yellow, almost urine looking liquid, that is part of the blood. This machine pumps the blood out of vein, and takes your blood in cycles, each time filling that container. 1 donation usually takes about 10-12 cycles. Once the machine takes the plasma out of the blood, it pumps it back into your vein, and starts the next cycle. At the end, they pump a saleen solution back into your vein to compensate for all the missing plasma. They pump this back in at room temp, 70*, so when it goes into your body which is 98.6*, it feels like ICE!

Ever read Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer? If not, it is a good read. All local libraries will have a copy. For fiction, John Grisham'* books are pretty good. Emerson'* writings are always good but not exactly light reading.
