2 magnets in the cup, 3 under the table, full glass of water through a 1" solid wood table
barbell is 10lbs, weights are 5lb each... 5 magnets

Did you try more weight? They each have 16 lbs of pulling force. I'm wondering if all 5 can lift 80 lbs. 
I doubt it, but 20lbs is not bad at all considering it'* not even fully contacting the bar.
