Default Turn on CNN...

American Airlines MD80 is making an emergency landing in Miami after nose gear problems.
He just made one attempt and climbed back out before touching the runway.
Probably having the tower check his gear before making the full landing run.

EDIT, may not be a major problem, gear door issue, apparently.

Safe landing. The gear itself was fine, it was just the gear door wouldn't close all the way.

Ya, just watched all of it. Non-event.

Glad everything went well.

While it was definitely an anti-climax, it could have been a hell of a lot worse.
When they first went to it, the pilot thought it was a gear-alignment problem because the gear was hanging up. After a few tries, they finally determined that while it wasn't closing, it was opening fully. If it hadn't, that would have been a very different piece of video...

BTW, just imagine that you're on the flight when they tell you the landing gear is acting up...

Yup. And all that happened there was that one small mechanism that was supposed to turn the wheel forwards as it folded out failed. The A320 stores it'* wheel in a side-ways position and rotates it as it descends.

The MD-80 has an issue where the front wheel can become mis-aligned and hang up while retracting. In this case, the door hung up, and wouldn't close, but after a couple tries, the landing gear came down and locked, allowing for a cautious, but trouble-free landing.
