Yes, the UP is absolutely gorgeous! We already can't wait to go back. Hopefully we'll go back for a fall color tour if all goes well.
You do the math on the copper.... 17 Tons = 34,000 lbs. Current market rate for 1 lb. of copper ~ $5. 5 * 34,000 = $170,000. $170K ain't too shabby!
We actually took I-75 up there. US-23 would have taken us too far out of the way.

Ah the memories. I haven't been up there for quite a while. We need to go there again sometime. The cousin of a guy here at work was just at Copper Harbor and was on the beach and found a life ring from the Edmund Fitzgerald. I guess it'* only the second one ever found out of 24.

Yeah, the thing about the life ring was on the radio. Actually heard it while on the way back from the UP last Friday. When we went up, about 10 miles south of the bridge we could see the smoke over the bridge. Wind must have been just right to send it that way from the 18000+ acre forest fire going on up near Tahquamenon. If it is like that again this Friday when I go over the bridge I will take pics.

We've done the the drive up US-23 before, just not this time.
My wife lived 10 miles south of Houghton from 1978 - 1981. She was a small child then, but does remember enormous amounts of snow!

We have never had a place there. Last Friday we went to visit a relative who lives in Germfask, and this friday I am going to my g/f'* parents cottage in the Curtis Germfask area. About 20 minutes from newberry if you are not familiar....
