My Uncle had all the books and we get parts at cost. The dealer was only charging $180 for the sensors. Advance has them for $59 each. Once they said $500........I had it towed out.

There is no way the outer timing cover has to come off.
It should be right on the outside cover and very easy to get to.

I did a VQ35 swap into my buddies 98 i30. So, I'm familiar with the VQ30/35.

If the magnet came off the timing gear, then ya, the timing cover needs to come off.
