Default Thinking about buying a GPS

When I went to DC in May one of the guys had a Mio GPS. After playing with it for a while I've decided I want to buy one. I'm not looking for a $300+ unit with directions to Mars....

Any suggestions?

Depends on what you want to use it for. If it'* going to be strictly for driving instructions, get something like WillWren got. If you plan on doing some hiking, camping, geocaching, etc., you might want to consider something a little more utilitarian and portable like, say a Garmin Rino or GPSMap 60. These will still do street navigation (they won't talk to you), but the screens are typically smaller. They're great for geocaching! If you don't know what that is, google it.

Also keep in mind that you'll likely have to buy the mapping software too, regardless of which unit you purchase. This tends to add significantly to your cost. By the time I was done I probably spent about $500 on a GPS, software, and a couple accessories (I got a multi-purpose GPS - GPSMap 60CSx). Mrs SSEM has since become a geocache junkie.

For now, it'* just for driving directions and POIs. I'd like to see a reasonably priced 2 DIN car stereo with a built in GPS. Right now the only one I've found is made by Panasonic and it'* $1500.

My Eversham requires no software. It'* also an MP3 player. It'* very impressive in the level of detail and different modes of driving directions. It'* ability to recalculate a route if you miss a turn is also impressive. Very quick recovery.

How is the battery life on the Eversham? That was the one complaint about the Mio from my buddy.
