Yep, I've done it. I made a few bump keys, but got rid of them because I didn't really wanna own them because I do believe they're illegal, maybe, maybe not. Still. Yes its easy, no you aren't safe, but like just said, where theres a will, theres a way.
Most places will have a charge of "possession of burglary tools", of which I'd bet that bump keys would be included. Around here, and in most other areas I'd think, burglary alarms have a 92% - 96% false rate, so sometimes they aren't condiered as important as maybe they should be. The cry wolf syndrome. It got so bad around here that they had to write a false alarm ordinance to start fining repeat offenders.
To cut down on that - take your alarm seriously. Keep it well maintained, and don't cheap out...get a good one. Don't set it off yourself because you forgot about it. If you have remote monitoring, and accidentally set it off, call your alarm company and advise them of that.

So, while we're on the subject, what IS a good alarm system?
More specifically, what brands are considered best?
What types are better (obviously from reading here, wireless is good)?

BTW Rod, Bumping a Wafer Lock
Magnetic barrel reeds with glass breakage sensors are the most annoying to break into. You'd also want a battery back-up.
If you're worried about security, Live in the side of a mountian, change your habits everyday, get a PO box, burn your trash. Otherwise just get a deadbolt and a simple alarm.
