I was going to do some work on a friends Impala and figured it would be worth it to try and scare him well in the process. Is there any harmless way to get a Series 2 to throw a SES light? I just want to freak him out and make him think I screwed something up and get him really worried then fix it after I freak him out a bit.

sure, pull the maf or O2 connector. pull them loose but not apart.

Even the IAT sensor should throw a code. Or the TPS. TPS would be fun, as it'll screw up his shift points, too.

just about any senor will do. i had a buddy undo a injetor once.

yeah, maf, tps, iat, o2, any of those will throw a code, as far as actual drivability goes, like how well the car will function..

And if you undo ALL of em, if it will run, LMAO, you'll scare him out of his mind, it'll run like utter crap.
