:?

Cant figure that one out John, seeing as I have one browser open using XP in my new Dell and burning over 300 megs as we speak. But I know little about computers. Maybe because it hasnt been online for 2 years and has Virus programs and updates all trying to boot up at the same time as the system? But even after it'* all booted up it is still dreadfully slow.

But anyway I got the specs to my ole IBM Celeron 566Mhz-128k cache-64MB- P133SDRAM. Its a IBM Aptiva E 2270- I810 Made in 2000 What kind of memory upgrade can I make to bring it back up to speed. Hate to trash it, barely ever used it. And hate using my laptop all the time. I would like to put the IBM on a router so I can take my laptop out on the porch or in the garage.

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs.../121048001.pdf

Looks like you can only use up to 128MB of ram in eash slot... (256mb Total) PC-100 or 133

Ive checked with several memory vendors, including Dell (where I bought my computer) and I can run up to 4 GB of 533MHz. Right now I have 1 GB of 400Mhz. I am running a P4 3.2GHz with HT on an Intel 915G (I think ) motherboard. I have a ATI x300 graphics card. What would be the best thing to upgrade to improve performance at this point, if not the RAM? I am just looking at ideas here. The graphics card is also tempting as I run Windows MCE alot, and that sucker can get pretty damn hot. I already ordered a new 120mm adjustable speed fan to attach to the side of my case to chill the rest of the casing though. Hopefully it will let me get another few years of good use out of it. I just reformatted it yesterday and tonight I am ghosting it in case of future problems. But anyway, back to the original question, what would be the best thing to upgrade to see the most noticable improvement in performance.

Order the DDR2-533Mhz ram, while its being shipped, overclock your 400mHz ram to 533 and see how it runs. if it can't or you get strange crashes the do not use the memory with with the new 533'*. Wait, I take that back, don't bother testing, you have a Dell which has a very limited bios and you won't be able to OC the memory. Just don't use the 400Mhz sticks with the 533'* because, as mentioned, the system will default to the slowest speed.

1gig is typically plenty for Xp so unless you run a few things all at the same time then the only improvments left is the ram speed increase, overclocking the processor (not an option in a dell), or upgrading the video card if your having slowness in newer games. Be sure dual channel ram is enabled.

Lastly Dell loads alot of crap, if you restored with their cd, check whats running (alot) and remove what you don't use. That'll be your biggest noticable inmprovement IMO.
