Default Stupid question.... Worth it?

There'* an '89 Sunbird Turbo convertible at a local dealership. The paint is shot, but the interior is awesome. It does have a lot of miles, around 170k, and it seems to have a lifter tick... The tick just developed over the last month or two according to the dealer. It was 2000, but he said he needs it gone so he'd sell it for 500. So... Who knows anything about the Turbo 2.0... IIRC someone had one...

I would be extremely nervous of a dealer willing to knock 75% off the price of a dar with " a new tick"....

WELL. I owned a 90 sunbird with the N/A 2.0 and it was the worst engine I've probably EVER had to deal with...even worse than my '88 mustang'* 2.4L

I know its not the EXACT same engine, but it can't be ALL that different being that its the same car, same displacement etc. Headgaskets, cooling system issues, electrical problems, hellacious nighmare. EVEN my ODOMETER stopped working It always had 92k...i really have no idea how many years it was like that. But I ended up LITERALLY paying someone to take it from me

OOO, I forgot another thing... The heads were DRENCHED in some kind of liquid, probably coolant, so I think the LIM gaskets probably went as well....

If your friend is willing to take on a complete engine rebuild, then the price sounds good.

believe it or not, he considers me his mechanic of sorts
So I'd probably do all that for him. Nothing that an FSM and some elbow grease can't fix!

But no, I told him to pass...
