Sister in laws 89 Grand Am, 2.5 liter 4 hitter. Cranks, no start and backfiring. So my brother and I get to thinking. (first mistake) Gotta be timing we said. Coil pack, ignition module and crank sensor are all one unit, mounted under the intake. NO room to reach or see anything. Transmission in the way underneath, so we couldnt really attack it from the bottom. Finally got enough wires and hoses outta the way to sorta reach it, got it replaced, engine runs good now. Sure made me more grateful for our roomy Bonney engine compartments and 3800'*!

I would agree, our bonnies are nice to work on , lots of room to under the hood. Even my Dads GP is alittle bit cramped for my liking....

Good Grief! You think they could make that a little easier! Ya know, one thing I always look at when looking at potential purchases is how hard it would be to do the ordinary service. I totally missed the lack of an accesible transmission filler on the Malibu though:(

I was at the garage once again with the Bonnie to get the fuel pressure checked ( all A OK) and get one tire re-sealed, ( gotta love old alum rims, lol).

Anyhow in came an older Honda Civic 4 door. They had to do a tune up on it, there was absolutely NO ROOM to work on it. The mechanic was cursing and we ( myself and my friend, the mechanic that did most of the work on the car) so I asked him if he wishes he was still working on the Bonnie, he said YES cause it had so much room to work on it, LOL.

I know exactly what you are talking about. If the coil pack is on the back side and under the lower intake like the distributor is on the 85 version 2.5l of my old Buick Somerset. It is a PITA to get to.
