The 3800 Series is being phased out.... I don't think they will be in use any more than another year or 2...... GM decided a long time ago that they were either going to do away with the 60* or the 90*.... Well the 90* got the cut...
Supposedly the 3900 is a redesign and not just a punched out 3400....
I had the Chance to check out a members 3500 and was pretty impressed with it... As well my cousins new Montanna SV6 with have the 3500 in it too... I was hoping to see him get one with a 3900 to move it around...
The 3.5 Twin Cam was not going to be a replacement for the 3800, But at one Point it was going to be the standard engine for the 00+ Bonneville... Later down the road they decided to stick with the 3800... I have said in the past it would have been fun to see an M62- M90 attached to the 3.5 Twin Cam
Then all of the sudden the 3.5 Twin Cam was dropped...
I am interested to see what direction they go in with the 3500-3900 V6'* ... Both of these engines make good power... And I am hopeful that with the newer designs the Lifter chatter and Piston scuff issues have been solved..
as much as I love the 3800 series engines, I have to say they have seen better days and their days are numbered
