Not necessarily, but at LEAST, the head needs to be changed out. I don't know about other areas, but around here, the heads on these engines seem to be the most common point of failure.

Being dual overhead cam makes changing the head out a nice task, having to line up both cams and the crank, but obviously it can be done.

With a cracked head, the car might make it for 10 years, or it could only last 10 more miles ( on the cracked head )

How do you know for sure that the head is cracked? Is coolant leaking into the oil, or the combustion chamber?

OK, Redneck Remedies to the rescue.

If you can see the crack in the head, and it'* not spurting fluid everywhere, you can patch it with JB Weld. I had a Corsica with a hairline crack in the head. It was just barely letting a little steam escape. I scrubbed it clean, roughed it up with some sandpaper, and applied 4 or 5 thin cots of JB Weld. Worked like a charm for a couple of years til we got rid of the car.

DISCLAIMER: This is not a repair, this is a patch. It may not work in all situations.

Went there this morning to look at it and get pics.

First of all its a V6 NOT the 4 cyl. As confirmed by 2 mechanics the head is cracked. Body damage will be in pics. I couldn't get it started cause the key wouldn't go in all the ways. Pics as soon as I get em uploaded

Is the 8th didget of the vin an M?

If this is a 1995 V6 then it should be the 3100 V6... That motor got run hot... You may be better off with a 3100 from the wrecker... The good thing about the car is that it will most likely have the GX3 3.33 4T60-E.... This car had a lot more trans than it needed which is and was a very good thing.. I would look for a low mileage 3100 and see whats swapable... For example, see if you can swap a newer 99-00 3100 Vin J into that car... These are pretty decent engines, the only thing they will not tolerate is being run hot...

Or you can get another head, and take both of the good heads down to the machine shop and have them reworked... This will cost you as the aluminum head will have to be straightened and shaved as well..

If it was a Quad 2.3..... I'd tell you do a swap on it or junk it...

The Quad is not a bad motor, but not exactly friendly to work on either... and if you have never set the timing on one.... Ouch...

Honestly, fix the little boo boos on the exterior, clean the inside up real good, and sell it for around $400. Just tell them it has a blown engine, as 3100s are VERY touchy. My mom'* overheated ONE time in her '94 Century when the water pump went, it was never right after that again. Finally locked up on her on the freeway. Pretty much when a car has a blown engine or tranny, they instantly lose a crapload off the value of the car. $400 seems very reasonable with the mileage.
