Well you can logically cross a transport on 12 inches on ice. But i still Don't recommend parking that close to shore lol thats where the ice is the weakest the water still moves and eroads the ice

Uuummmmm....stress cracks don't necessarily mean bad ice. Actually, it is just the opposite.

Dark ice like that is sorta safeish when only an inch thick. That stress crack is caused by the face that the ice is so dense, as it freezes it doesn't compress. Stress cracks are comforting.

Quite often, the shore is fine, and maybe safer than in the middle. Near shore the ice freezes almost all the way through to the bed....its solid ice, almost no water there. I suppose it all depend though, cuz our lakes always freeze when the water is smooth as glass....

EDIT: Oops, couple got in before me

haha, i didn't have the car on the ice, i was still on the landing, i was STANDING on the ice.
it was good solid ice, but the snow warmed it up and made it all nasty.

looks like logan knows his ice thanks for the info. i still wouldn't take a car on it unless i had full comprehensive.

HAHA, with that said though, the only place I have ever fallen through the ice was RIGHT near shore, but that was an interesting and unique situation.
